Join Our Lab
Ph.D. Students
We are recruiting exceptional PhD students to join our dynamic research group investigating critical frontiers in mechanics of advanced materials. Opportunities span computational modeling, machine learning, experimental mechanics, and advanced materials development for extreme environments.
Specific areas of interest include:
- Physics-based modeling and simulation of materials mechanics across scales
- Data science and machine learning for processing-microstructure-property relationships
- In situ mechanical testing techniques probing deformation at the micro and nanoscale
- Characterizing and designing materials performance in harsh environments
- Multiscale modeling of fracture, fatigue, and structural reliability
Students proficient in small scale testing, electron microscopy, advanced coding, machine learning, and/or scientific computing are strongly encouraged to apply.
Applications for Fall admissions are due December 15th. Outstanding PhD applicants are encouraged to apply. For more information about how to apply, check our department webpage here https://me.jhu.edu/education/graduate-studies/.
Interested candidates are also welcome to contact Professor El-Awady ([email protected]) expressing their topic of interest and are encourage to include their up-to-date CV.
Women and underrepresented minority students are strongly urged to apply. Our lab offers an inclusive, intellectually stimulating environment to empower the next generation of research leaders in materials science and engineering. Join us!
Postdoctoral Fellows
Currently, there are no available funded positions for postdoctoral fellows. If you wish to apply for an external postdoctoral fellowship to join our research group, please submit your CV to Professor El-Awady at [email protected].
Master’s Students
Students currently enrolled or accepted into the full time Mechanical Engineering Master’s Program or those in the Part-time Mechanical Engineering Master’s Program for Engineering Professionals who are interested in a thesis project in the areas of computational modeling, machine learning, experimental mechanics, and advanced materials development for extreme environments should send their CV to Professor El-Awady at [email protected].
Undergraduate Students
Undergraduate students interested in research can always send an email to Professor El-Awady at [email protected]. Please include your up-to-date CV to the email.
Please note that due to the high rate of inquiries you might not get an immediate response. Prof. El-Awady does check all emails and will attempt to respond to all emails as much as possible. However, those who have research interests that match opportunities within our lab will likely get a faster response.
